Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been sworn in for a second term following his landslide victory in the disputed September 7 presidential election. The ceremony took place at the People’s Palace in Algiers, with Tebboune’s challengers, Islamist Abdellali Hassan Cherif and Socialist Youcef Aouchiche, attending. Algeria’s constitutional court had, three days prior, certified Tebboune’s victory, which his opponents had called into question. The court had ordered a recounting of the vote which showed that Tebboune secured 84.3% of the vote, with 7.7 million votes, surpassing his 2019 results by a large margin. Cherif, representing the Movement of Society for Peace, garnered 9.6% of the vote, while Aouchiche of the Socialist Forces Front received 6.1%. The election, criticized by government opponents as undemocratic, saw a turnout of 46.1%, up from 39.9% in the previous election.
