Ancient Egyptian pleasure boat discovered

3

Archaeologists have uncovered a rare ancient Egyptian pleasure boat off the coast of Alexandria, dated to the early first century AD. Measuring an impressive 115 feet, this “floating palace” matches the vivid descriptions of Greek historian Strabo, who famously wrote of revelers dancing “without restraint” on these opulent vessels. Found near the submerged island of Antirhodos in the city’s ancient harbor, the wreck offers the first physical evidence of such boats long known only from texts and art. It features unique flat-bow construction designed for navigating shallow waters. Led by maritime archaeologist Franck Goddio, the archaeological team that discovered the boat believes it may have sunk during the catastrophic destruction of a nearby Temple of Isis. The discovery promises fresh insight into elite leisure, religion, and daily life in Roman-era Egypt.
