Belgium has formally joined South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, adding momentum to a growing coalition challenging Israel’s conduct in Gaza. The ICJ confirmed that Brussels filed a declaration of intervention, joining countries such as Brazil, Ireland, Spain, and Türkiye. South Africa launched proceedings in December 2023, arguing that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza breaches the 1948 Genocide Convention—claims Israel strongly denies. While a final ruling may take years, the court has already issued binding provisional measures ordering Israel to prevent genocidal acts and allow humanitarian access in the Gaza Strip. Despite these orders, fighting has continued, while the US and several European countries continue to provide support to Israel.
