Bipartisan US Senate Bill Targets Sudan War Backers

A bipartisan group of US senators has introduced legislation aimed at increasing pressure on those fueling Sudan’s civil war. The proposed PEACE in Sudan Act would impose targeted sanctions on actors supplying arms, recruiting child soldiers, directing foreign forces, or obstructing humanitarian access in the war, now entering its fourth year. It also directs the State Department to assess whether armed groups qualify for terrorist designations and requires a comprehensive US strategy for securing a ceasefire. If the measures reduce external support for the warring parties, it could benefit civilians affected by the conflict. In contrast, it would place armed actors and their foreign backers at risk of financial and diplomatic isolation. The bill’s effectiveness will depend on enforcement and international cooperation, but it signals growing US willingness to play a more active role in addressing Sudan’s devastating humanitarian crisis.
