A peace initiative led by the US and key Middle Eastern allies is aiming to end Sudan’s devastating civil war, but experts warn its chances of success remain slim for now. The Quad—the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE—is circulating a five-point peace plan: immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, civilian protection, political transition, and a $1.5 billion reconstruction fund. However, serious challenges remain. Notably, the army refuses to legitimize the RSF—the very dispute that ignited this war in 2023. Also, new fronts keep opening up between the two sides, and competing regional interests undermine momentum. With over 14 million displaced and millions facing hunger, the most realistic outcome in the near term may be temporary humanitarian pauses rather than lasting peace, unless international pressure intensifies.
