The 39-year-old made his announcement to an enthusiastic crowd of supporters in Elsies River, flanked by prominent party members, including Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube. Widely seen as the frontrunner and preferred candidate of party stalwart Helen Zille, Hill-Lewis enters the race following outgoing leader John Steenhuisen’s decision not to seek re-election. He praised Steenhuisen for strengthening the DA and defended the party’s participation in the Government of National Unity, arguing it must not just hold office but deliver real impact. With nominations now open until March 23, the race is officially underway for the party’s top job.
