Nigeria has secured support from China Industrial Bank (CIB) for the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project (NUCAP), a major initiative designed to connect more than 20 million unserved and underserved citizens. Minister of Communications Bosun Tijani said CIB will help fund the deployment of at least 1,000 telecommunications towers before year-end, forming part of a broader plan to build 3,700 towers in rural and riverine communities lacking reliable connectivity. The project, described as a green telecommunications network, aims to boost digital inclusion and economic opportunities across the country. Tijani noted that the investment marks CIB’s first venture in Nigeria and reflects growing international confidence in the nation’s digital economy agenda. The announcement comes alongside broader efforts to improve telecom infrastructure, with operators committing to upgrade 12,000 sites in 2026 through expanded 4G and 5G deployment and the modernization of older networks.
