The Democratic Republic of Congo is the latest nation to join an expanding network of migrant agreements with the United States. Under a new deal, Kinshasa will offer “temporary reception” to deported individuals, with Washington picking up the entire tab to ensure no strain on the local treasury. While the government emphasizes that this isn’t a permanent settlement plan, the move highlights the DRC’s growing role in global humanitarian responsibility despite its own internal conflicts. Located strategically in Kinshasa, these monitored sites allow for strict administrative and security oversight. Crucially, Congo maintains full control over entry and exit decisions, with each case assessed individually. The agreement comes while the US mediates between Congo and Rwanda over the ongoing conflict in the east. As the Trump administration explores similar partnerships across the continent, this development marks a pivotal shift in regional migration policy.
