E-bike Firm Plans to Manufacture Parts in Africa

African electric mobility company Spiro plans to begin manufacturing 90% of its vehicle components within Africa by the first quarter of 2027—a shift from its current model of assembling imported parts. CEO Gagan Gupta confirmed the ambitious plan, which follows the company’s recent $215 million fundraise to expand into new markets. Spiro has already deployed over 100,000 electric motorcycles and 2,500 battery swap stations across seven countries in East and West Africa. The announcement comes as electric vehicle adoption accelerates across the continent, with sales rising nearly sixfold between 2023 and 2025. Local firms and global players such as BYD are driving adoption as governments and consumers seek cleaner transportation alternatives.
