East African countries commit to joint satellite

Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda have agreed to jointly develop a regional satellite to improve communication, broadcasting, and digital connectivity across East Africa. The proposed Northern Corridor Regional Communication and Broadcasting Satellite Initiative seeks to reduce dependence on foreign satellite systems and expand access to underserved communities. It will begin with a jointly funded feasibility study expected to take 12 to 18 months, with each country contributing $250,000. The move reflects broader momentum in Africa’s space sector: governments across the continent allocated $828 million to space this year—a 32% increase from 2025—while the total African space economy reached $25 billion in 2024. With the recent inauguration of the African Space Agency, which will help harmonize national policies and pool resources, the continent’s space ambitions are entering a new phase of growth.
