Archaeologists from Egypt and China have uncovered a remarkably preserved ancient sacred lake at the Montu Temple precinct inside Luxor’s Karnak Temple Complex, revealing a rare new chapter in Egypt’s religious past. The newly found man-made reservoir, which had not been recorded in early archaeological records, sits near the Temple of Maat and forms a unique north–south alignment with the already known sacred lake of the Montu Temple. Researchers say the discovery fills a major gap in Egyptology, offering the only sacred lake ever revealed through fully systematic excavation. Additional finds—including Osiris statuettes, Late Period stone blocks, and ritual remains—shed new light on temple practices and female religious authority in ancient Thebes.
