Ethiopian Airlines has begun construction of Bishoftu International Airport, an ambitious project set to become Africa’s largest aviation hub with a planned capacity of 110 million passengers a year. Announced by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister’s Office, the airport is designed to ease mounting pressure on Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and support the airline’s rapidly expanding global network. Located just 40 kilometers from the capital, Bishoftu will operate as part of a multi-airport strategy to future-proof Ethiopia’s aviation sector. The $12.5 billion project, backed by Ethiopian Airlines, international lenders, and the African Development Bank, is expected to transform regional connectivity and cement Ethiopia’s position as a leading gateway linking Africa to the world.
