Ethiopia Eyes $1B in Annual Revenue from Africa’s Largest Hydroelectric Dam

2

Ethiopia is poised to harness monumental economic and energy potential with the completion and inauguration of Africa’s largest hydroelectric project, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced that the $4 billion dam is expected to generate an impressive $1 billion in annual revenue, which will help fund future infrastructure ventures. With a capacity to produce over 5,000 megawatts—more than double Ethiopia’s current electricity generation—the dam marks a transformative step for a country where nearly half of the population still lacks electricity. While Egypt and Sudan remain wary, warning of risks to their Nile water access, Abiy dismissed those concerns, framing GERD as a shared opportunity for regional prosperity.
