Ethiopia’s fragile peace faces renewed strain after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) reestablished the region’s pre-war government, escalating tensions with federal authorities. The party announced it had restored its pre-war legislative council and elected party leader Debretsion Gebremichael as regional president. The move effectively sidelines the interim administration created under the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement. The TPLF accuses Addis Ababa of withholding civil servant salaries, provoking armed skirmishes, and extending the interim administration’s tenure without consultation. Meanwhile, the interim administration president, Tadesse Worede, has refused to step down, creating rival political administrations and raising fears of renewed conflict in a region still recovering from a war that killed hundreds of thousands.
