Ethiopia PM calls for fuel rationing amid oil disruptions

Ethiopian Prime Minister speaks on fuel shortages and oil disruptions during a press conference.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has issued an urgent call for fuel conservation as escalating Middle East hostilities choke global oil supply chains. Following US-Israeli strikes on Iran that killed around 1,300 people—including Supreme Leader Khamenei—Iran has retaliated and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor for global petroleum shipments. For Ethiopia, which imports all its petroleum, the disruption is acutely felt. Abiy is urging service stations and citizens to prioritize essential sectors, ensuring that healthcare, food distribution, and public transport keep moving. The crisis underscores a fundamental vulnerability for African nations that depend entirely on imported fuel.
