Ethiopia has firmly rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that Washington funded the $4 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest hydroelectric project. In an address to parliament, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stressed that the $4 billion project was funded entirely by Ethiopians through taxes, bonds, and contributions, without foreign loans. This rebuttal highlights the dam’s deep national significance for Ethiopia, which sees it as crucial for development. However, downstream Egypt views the Nile River dam as a severe threat to its water supply. While Trump offered to mediate the long-running dispute, the conflicting narratives underscore the high stakes and enduring tensions surrounding this transformative project on the Nile.
