The European Union has renewed its arms embargo against Zimbabwe for another year, maintaining a ban first imposed in 2002 over human rights violations under former President Robert Mugabe’s government. The restrictions prohibit selling, supplying, or transferring military equipment and related technical assistance to Zimbabwe, though the EU emphasized it remains “constructively engaged” with the country and hopes to deepen trade and investment ties. Notably, all individual asset freezes and travel bans have been lifted, with Zimbabwe Defence Industries removed from the sanctions list last year, leaving only the weapons embargo in place. Due to the ban, Zimbabwe has had to find alternative sources of military equipment, including China and Russia.
