Faith, Heritage, and Profit Collide in Egypt’s Mount Sinai Mega-Project

1

Mount Sinai, one of the world’s most sacred sites for Jews, Christians, and Muslims, is at the center of a heated dispute as Egypt pushes ahead with a luxury tourism project. The venture, dubbed the “Great Transfiguration Project,” aims to boost tourism with new hotels, a visitor center, and a cable car up the mountain where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments. However, this development threatens the pristine UNESCO World Heritage landscape and has already displaced the local Bedouin community, the Jebeleya tribe, who have long served as its guardians. While the historic St. Catherine’s Monastery remains protected following international pressure, critics argue the project prioritizes commercial interests over cultural preservation and spiritual significance, warning it will irrevocably alter this ancient desert sanctuary.
