Former President Thomas Boni Yayi has resigned as the leader of “Les Démocrates” (LD), Benin’s primary opposition party, ahead of the 2026 general elections. While remaining a party member, Yayi cited the need for “generational renewal” as the reason for his exit. With Yayi’s exit, President Patrice Talon’s ruling coalition immediately gains a tactical advantage as the opposition loses its most recognizable figurehead and unifying force. For the party, the development could potentially result in an identity crisis and internal fragmentation as the party struggles to replace a charismatic leader who served as a bulwark against the government.
