Four New African Novels Worth Reading This June

A new selection of African fiction arriving this June explores themes of power, identity, memory, and survival through diverse storytelling styles. Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé’s The Heirs follows five adopted siblings whose lives unravel after the death of their billionaire father sparks a bitter inheritance battle. In House of Margins, Botswana author Tlotlo Tsamaase blends psychological suspense and horror as a writing residency becomes the center of a mystery shaped by media narratives and distorted truths. Nigerian writer Uchenna Awoke’s A Siege of Owls draws on Igbo storytelling traditions to examine displacement and resilience through magical realism. Meanwhile, Sudanese author Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s At Sea places readers aboard an offshore oil rig where workplace tensions, environmental risks, and corporate power collide. Together, the books showcase the breadth and ambition of contemporary African literature while tackling issues with global relevance.
