A new healthcare center in Burundi’s Bubanza region is taking shape as part of an effort to expand medical services for rural communities. Designed by Kéré Architecture for the NGO Ineza Clinic, the project spreads across ten pavilions on a hillside about 40 kilometers from Bujumbura, creating a 3,000-square-meter complex focused on maternity care and specialized surgical care. To reduce costs and environmental impact, the design relies heavily on locally sourced bricks, stone, and traditional building skills, boosting the regional economy while training local workers. The ingenious design, which takes advantage of the local topography, incorporates natural ventilation and shaded waiting areas to improve comfort without heavy energy use. With construction underway, the first of two phases is expected to open in 2026, offering a much-needed boost to healthcare access in the region.
