From Rust to Riches: Africa’s Classic Cars Make a Global Comeback

Classic vintage cars parked under a shaded structure in a quiet, scenic area.

Across Africa, a vibrant classic car restoration scene is turning rusted relics into prized collectibles. In South Africa, enthusiasts like 25-year-old Paul Maree are unearthing vintage gems, such as a rare 1965 VW double cab, and meticulously restoring them for global collectors. Maree, who inherited his passion from his late father, emphasizes that restoring vehicles requires a lot of dedication, with some cars taking years to finish. Though surprising, South Africa’s climate also plays a crucial role in restoring these vehicles. The country’s dry air, especially in regions like the Eastern Cape and Free State, helps to preserve these vehicles. Without this, a vast majority of cars would rust beyond repair. Despite the lucrative nature of the business, the booming international demand raises concerns among critics who fear that South Africa is losing its local automotive heritage.
