From Snowy Passes to Crimson Lakes: Africa’s Surprising Seasonal Makeovers

Across Africa, nature’s seasonal magic transforms landscapes in ways that defy expectation. For instance, South Africa’s Namaqualand, dry and barren for most of the year, explodes into a vivid sea of wildflowers each spring, drawing awe-struck visitors from far and wide. Not far off, the Sani Pass between South Africa and Lesotho reinvents itself with the seasons—lush and green in summer, yet snow-covered and alpine in winter, offering an adventure few associate with the continent. Equally dramatic is Lake Natron in Tanzania, where searing heat transforms water into a blood-red liquid, due to blooming microorganisms, and flamingos gather by the thousands. Elsewhere—Japan, Australia, and the Alps—nature undergoes similar seasonal changes, but Africa’s transformations are uniquely vivid and ecologically significant.
