Ghana is rallying global support for a new United Nations resolution that would formally recognize the transatlantic slave trade as one of history’s gravest crimes against humanity. Speaking ahead of the resolution’s presentation, Ghana’s ambassador to the UN, Samuel Yao Kumah, said the measure aims to reinforce ongoing reparations efforts, particularly those championed by Caribbean nations. While the resolution would not create legal obligations, it seeks political recognition of a historical system that reshaped global inequalities. Ghana argues that acknowledging this legacy could strengthen international efforts to confront injustices rooted in slavery and open the door to broader conversations about accountability and repair.
