Ghana has officially declared every Wednesday “Fugu Day,” encouraging citizens to wear the iconic northern smock as a celebration of national identity following a viral online exchange with Zambians. The traditional outfit was thrust into the spotlight after President John Dramani Mahama wore it during a state visit to Zambia, where it was mockingly labeled a “blouse,” sparking spirited cultural pride among Ghanaians on social media. Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie said the weekly showcase would strengthen unity while boosting local weavers, designers, and traders. The structured, hand-woven smock carries heavy symbolism: Kwame Nkrumah wore it at independence, Mahama has donned it at the UN, and other presidents have also worn it on occasion. To Ghanaians, the garment symbolizes authority, heritage, and confidence. Meanwhile, in a show of solidarity, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has announced plans to order fugus in bulk.
