Efforts to combat the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in Central and East Africa received a major boost after global health organization CEPI committed over $60 million to vaccine development projects. The funding includes up to $50 million for Moderna’s experimental vaccine, alongside support for candidates developed by the University of Oxford, the Serum Institute of India, and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. The outbreak has resulted in the deaths of over 40 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo and one person in neighboring Uganda. Health experts believe vaccine candidates could enter trials within months, offering hope against a strain for which no approved vaccine currently exists.
