Goa Architect Blends Northern African Brickwork into Unique Home Design

Young architect Kabir Nijjar has crafted a one-of-a-kind home in Goa that blends sustainability, tradition, and innovation. The house, partially inspired by Nubian building techniques, features curved vaulted roofs, twisted brick columns, and rooms that grow out of stairway landings. Nijjar shunned concrete in building the house, instead using locally sourced materials like compressed laterite bricks, lime mortar, and hand-poured oxide floors. He also embraced natural ventilation and light, reinforcing the house’s traditional feel. Meanwhile, brick jalis, a Madras roof, and a stunning Rohtak dome with an open oculus all reflect a deep respect for craftsmanship. With help from skilled masons and full creative freedom from his father, a retired admiral, Nijjar has created a soulful home that’s both rooted in heritage and refreshingly original.
