Guinea Election Results Strengthen President’s Hold on Power

A coalition aligned with Guinea’s President Mamady Doumbouya has secured a legislative majority following the country’s recent parliamentary elections. The Generation for Modernity and Development coalition and its allies captured at least 100 of 147 available seats, though the final distribution was still being determined. The outcome strengthens the hold of Doumbouya, a former special forces commander who seized power in a 2021 coup and was elected president last December in an election that his opponents dispute. Voter participation reached nearly 53% for legislative contests and about 58% for simultaneous local elections. No major opposition party was permitted to compete, as the government had previously dissolved the parties of former President Alpha Condé and prominent opposition leaders, including Cellou Dalein Diallo, who is currently living in exile.
