Gulf States tighten grip on Africa’s green future

Leaders from the Global South discuss economic dignity at Africa.com event.

Gulf States, led by the United Arab Emirates, are rapidly cementing their dominance in Africa’s renewable energy sector, reshaping the continent’s green transition. Flush with capital and driven by limited domestic markets, Emirati and other Gulf Cooperation Council firms have poured tens of billions of dollars into African solar, wind, and storage projects over the past five years. Major players such as AMEA Power, Masdar, and Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power are scaling up megaprojects in countries with strong energy markets, while Gulf-backed funds finance everything from grid upgrades to critical minerals. At the same time, the UAE has emerged as a hub for off-grid energy innovators targeting rural Africa. As Africa races to close its power gap, Gulf capital, expertise, and long-term ambition are becoming indispensable.
