How knitting is restoring dignity for Kenyan cancer survivors

Knitting supplies and hats for cancer survivors in Kenya.

When Mary Mwangi was diagnosed with breast cancer, she feared the worst. Instead, she found healing through knitting—and turned that personal journey into a lifeline for thousands of other women. Through her group, the New Dawn Cancer Warriors, Mwangi creates knitted breast prostheses for mastectomy survivors at just $10 each—a fraction of the $60 silicone alternatives. In a country where over 6,000 breast cancer cases are diagnosed annually and reconstructive surgery remains unaffordable and uninsured, the soft, fiber-filled prostheses are restoring confidence and dignity to women who once stayed indoors out of shame. The initiative provides emotional support and small income opportunities for many women, helping them find the strength to keep living after their diagnosis.
