Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso’s military leader, is at the heart of a growing digital cult. He has been glorified online through AI-generated images, deepfakes, and viral edits, which portray him as a pan-African hero and anti-imperialist icon. While his rhetoric resonates with frustrated youth across Africa, much of his popularity is driven by spectacle, not policy. Despite his strong anti-Western stance and promises of sovereignty, Traoré’s government has delivered minimal reform to Burkinabés. While he has made some noticeable progress, such as increasing worker salaries, he has done little to resolve the country’s security challenges. Despite his failings, critics of Traoré face increasing online abuse, creating a climate of digitally enforced silence.
