ICC Prosecutor Seeks Arrest Warrants for Perpetrators of West Darfur Atrocities

The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor, Karim Khan, has announced plans to seek arrest warrants for individuals accused of committing atrocities in Sudan’s West Darfur region, where ethnic cleansing by paramilitary forces continues amid a 19-month conflict. Addressing the UN Security Council, Khan warned that crimes are being used as a weapon of war. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has led to mass killings and displacements, particularly targeting the Masalit and other non-Arab groups. Khan stated that available evidence suggests that both the government’s forces and the RSF have committed war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. He voiced concerns about gender-based violence and called for adherence to international humanitarian law.
