In the Nigeria Pavilion, Criticism Meets Optimism                       

While very few African countries participate in the Venice Biennale, this year marks the second that Nigeria has mounted a pavilion, and it’s one of the most ambitious of all. Represented by eight acclaimed artists and spanning a wide array of media, its concept and scale are awe-inspiring and intended to make people think differently about the country. Other projects — by Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Onyeka Igwe, Abraham Oghobase, Toyin Ojih Odutola and Fatimah Tuggar — span drawing and painting, video and photography, even A.I. and augmented reality. They suggest fresh ways for Nigerians, and also the world, to think of the country — a behemoth of some 220 million people that is often dismissed as a place of crisis or corruption.
