Kenya has appointed a new chairperson and six commissioners to its Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), marking a crucial step toward stabilizing its electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election. President William Ruto approved the appointments after a prolonged vacancy caused by legal delays and a 2022 fallout with dissenting commissioners who disputed his victory. The dispute eventually escalated to the Supreme Court, which upheld Ruto’s win. Given that the IEBC has been without leadership since 2023, the new appointments are seen as vital to restoring trust in a country with a history of contested polls. The newly appointed officials will serve in their respective positions for the next six years.
