Kenya’s government is investigating the alleged abduction of Kizza Besigye, an Ugandan opposition leader, who vanished from a Nairobi book launch and resurfaced days later in a Ugandan military court. Besigye, a known critic of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, faces charges that include illegal firearm possession. His disappearance has sparked criticism of Kenya’s handling of foreign dissidents, with human rights groups accusing it of cooperating with foreign governments to target political opponents. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, who is the executive director of UNAIDS, denies the charges against Besigye stating that he has not owned a firearm in two decades. Besigye is currently detained in Kampala’s Luzira Prison, with his court appearance set for December 2.
