Kenyan Protester Shot Dead Opposing US Ebola Facility

A protest against a planned US-supported Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya’s Laikipia region turned deadly after demonstrators alleged that police shot and killed a protester. Human rights groups also reported arrests and the use of live ammunition against protesters. The protesters argued that the project exposes Kenya to unnecessary risks, especially since the country has no recorded Ebola cases. A High Court judge has twice ordered the government to halt implementation of the project, yet US military aircraft continue delivering staff and equipment to the site. Kenya’s President William Ruto has since defended the facility, but many critics fail to see any benefit given the country’s lack of cases. They argue that the project only benefits the US government, which has sought to prevent Ebola-infected individuals from entering the United States. The controversy could influence public trust in health partnerships, emergency preparedness initiatives, and broader US-Kenya security and development cooperation. It also risks deepening anti-American sentiment in a key East African partner at a moment when US influence on the continent is already contested.
