Leaders in northern Nigeria have urged President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to decline alleged requests by France and the US to relocate their respective military bases to the country following their exit from the neighboring West African countries of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. According to the group, the relocation of these bases will disrupt Nigeria’s defense and security as well as jeopardize its sovereignty. They argued that, if Nigeria were to agree, the relocation would have disastrous economic and environmental consequences. The group also highlighted that the West’s purpose for establishing military bases in West Africa, which is to combat terrorism, has been something of a failure despite the long-time presence of the bases in the region.
