A legal clash has erupted between South African composer Lebo M and Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi over the famous opening chant from The Lion King. Lebo M, who helped create the iconic “Circle of Life” introduction, alleges the comedian deliberately mistranslated the lyrics during a podcast and stand-up performances, undermining the chant’s cultural meaning and damaging his reputation. While Disney’s official translation defines the Zulu lyrics as a majestic royal salute, Jonasi’s comedic version offered a more literal—and decidedly less majestic—interpretation. The lawsuit argues the comedian presented his translation as fact rather than satire, causing over $20 million in alleged damages. Jonasi, however, says the controversy opens the door for a broader conversation about how African stories are portrayed globally.
