Lewis Hamilton wants an African Grand Prix before he retires

Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton says he hopes to race in an African Grand Prix before retiring, calling for the sport to return to the continent after more than three decades. Speaking ahead of the new F1 season, Hamilton noted that Africa is the only continent without a Grand Prix and revealed he has been pushing for the sport’s return in discussions with stakeholders. Formula One last held a race in Africa in 1993 in South Africa, and discussions have periodically surfaced about bringing the event back. Recently, the Rwandan government pushed to host the event, but that possibility has since receded. For Hamilton—who has African heritage—the issue is personal. He believes a Grand Prix on African soil would not only celebrate the continent but also inspire a new generation of fans and drivers.
