Macron Unveils Memorial for Rwanda Genocide Victims

French President Emmanuel Macron has inaugurated a new memorial in Paris honoring victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, attending the ceremony alongside Rwandan President Paul Kagame. The monument, called L’Archive, commemorates the estimated 800,000 people—mostly ethnic Tutsis—killed between April and July 1994. Macron described the memorial as a milestone in reconciliation, while Kagame praised France’s willingness to confront its historical responsibilities. Relations between the two countries have improved significantly since Macron acknowledged France’s failures during the genocide in a 2021 visit to Kigali. A French historical commission later concluded that France bore “serious and overwhelming” responsibility for not preventing the massacres, though it found no evidence of direct complicity. The memorial’s unveiling symbolizes a growing commitment to remembrance and diplomatic reconciliation.
