Malian authorities have launched an investigation into suspected insider involvement in coordinated attacks on military bases that shook the country on April 25. Prosecutors say five suspects have been identified, including three active-duty soldiers, highlighting concerns over infiltration within the armed forces. The attacks, claimed by an al-Qaeda-linked group and Tuareg separatists, dealt a significant blow to the military government, resulting in the death of the defense minister and the loss of Kidal to armed groups. Violence has since spread across northern Mali, raising fears of further territorial gains by insurgents. Militants have also threatened to encircle the capital, Bamako, intensifying security concerns. While military leader Assimi Goita insists the situation is under control, analysts warn that the government’s ability to retain key northern cities like Timbuktu and Gao will be critical in determining the conflict’s trajectory.
