The Port of Maputo is embarking on an ambitious $1 billion transformation to become a leading logistics and transshipment hub on Africa’s east coast. The strategy, spearheaded by DP World, involves a major physical expansion, including deepening berths to host larger post-Panamax vessels and boosting container capacity. Complementing this are efforts to strengthen rail and road corridors, which aim to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve environmental sustainability. Special economic zones and value-adding facilities, including processing and packaging plants, are also planned to spur industrial growth. With a focus on serving landlocked neighboring countries and integrating modern logistics systems, Maputo seeks to become a vital gateway that fuels trade across the continent.
