Mnangagwa’s term extension challenged by war veterans

Six Zimbabwe war veterans have mounted a challenge to proposed constitutional changes put forward by the ruling ZANU-PF party. The changes, recently approved by Zimbabwe’s cabinet, seek to extend presidential terms from five years to seven. Additionally, they would make presidential elections a function of parliament, rather than the electorate. The veterans allege that the changes are unconstitutional, especially since the proponents do not intend to put them to a referendum, and are designed to benefit President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mnangagwa is currently set to conclude his second and final term in 2028, but could stay on until 2030 if the changes pass.
