Morocco Eyes Economic Boost From 2030 World Cup

While Morocco’s national team competes at the 2026 World Cup, the kingdom is already preparing to co-host the 2030 tournament with Spain and Portugal, a project analysts describe as central to King Mohammed VI’s modernization agenda. Experts say the event is meant to drive economic transformation, boost Morocco’s international image, and showcase the country as a stable investment hub, especially since it lacks major oil or gas reserves. Billions are being invested in stadiums, airports, and transit infrastructure, including a planned 115,000-seat stadium near Casablanca. However, the spending has sparked controversy, with youth-led protests last year criticizing the prioritization of prestige projects over education and healthcare. Environmental concerns, particularly around water scarcity and tourism growth, have also emerged, leaving open whether the tournament becomes a lasting turning point or merely an expensive showcase.
