Morocco says its long-delayed $1 billion liquefied natural gas project is not dead—just on pause. After briefly rattling energy markets by announcing an indefinite halt, officials now say fresh tenders for the Mediterranean LNG terminal will be issued “in due course.” The government is reassessing the project as global gas markets swing wildly, shaped by weather shocks, geopolitical tensions, and speculative trading. These shifts have complicated assumptions behind the ambitious plan, which includes pipelines linking the Nador West Med port to key industrial hubs. Still, the project remains central to Morocco’s long-term energy strategy, even as new LNG supply from the US, Qatar, and Africa promises to reshape global prices.
