The Port of Tangier in northern Morocco is preparing for a surge in shipping as regional tensions reshape global trade routes. With instability affecting key waterways such as the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Suez Canal, major carriers including Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM are diverting vessels around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope. As a result, Tangier—already one of the Mediterranean’s busiest hubs after handling 11.1 million containers in 2025—is expanding capacity to host the increased traffic, aiming to avoid congestion and keep cargo flowing smoothly to Europe. The shift is also benefiting other African ports, including Kenya’s Lamu, highlighting how geopolitical shocks are quietly redrawing maritime logistics across the continent.
