MTN, Africa’s largest telecoms company, is in advanced talks with US and European firms to develop data centers across the continent, a move aimed at powering the growth of AI-driven services. CEO Ralph Mupita said the South Africa-based company will provide part of the investment required to build the data centers, while also seeking partnerships with AI infrastructure providers and hyperscalers. Once completed, the company plans to rent out capacity to businesses and governments. Africa currently accounts for less than 1% of global AI data center capacity, with most facilities concentrated in South Africa. MTN hopes to finalize partnerships within the year, a step that could reshape Africa’s digital infrastructure and accelerate its role in the global AI economy.
