NGO accuses Nestlé of endangering African babies

9

Nestlé is facing fresh scrutiny after a new Public Eye investigation alleged the company adds sugar to Cerelac baby cereals sold across Africa, despite only selling sugar-free versions in Europe. The findings, which showed added sugar in 90 percent of samples tested, clash with World Health Organization guidelines warning that early sugar exposure can fuel childhood obesity. Civil society groups across Africa have accused Nestlé of applying “double standards” and urged it to stop distributing sugary infant products on the continent. Nestlé denies wrongdoing, insisting it treats all markets equally and is expanding no-sugar variants globally. The controversy comes as Africa battles rising childhood obesity alongside persistent malnutrition, deepening concerns about corporate responsibility.
