Nicole Nomsa Moyo, a Design Indaba alumnus, has unveiled Pearl Jam, the 10th Annual Miami Design District Commission winner, at Design Miami. The installation celebrates African heritage, womanhood, and cultural expression, inspired by Ndebele art. Moyo’s large-scale sculptures include jewelry-like pieces such as bracelets, necklaces, and earrings crafted from aluminum and adorned with traditional beadwork. Over 100,000 beads were used, with pieces ranging from 15 cm to 2 meters. Handcrafted by Ndebele women artisans, Pearl Jam reimagines cultural traditions as monumental sculptures, blending heritage with contemporary design and celebrating the role of women in preserving culture.
