Nigeria and China Increase Trade Cooperation Amid Trump’s Tariff Storm

1

Abuja and Beijing are deepening trade ties in a bid to navigate the storm of global tariff tensions fueled by US President Donald Trump’s renewed trade war with China. During the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Rio, Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, to discuss slashing tariffs, boosting investment, and enhancing infrastructure collaboration between the two countries. This comes as Trump attempts to force countries to the negotiation table with tariffs, including 145% on Chinese exports to America and 14% on Nigerian exports. However, Beijing has refused to capitulate. It retaliated with 125% on US exports to China and recently released a defiant propaganda video, escalating the standoff. For Nigeria, the talks mark a strategic pivot—one that could secure its role in an increasingly polarized global economy.
